Turmeric is the rhizome of Curcuma longa, a ginger relative, and needs no introduction in an Indian kitchen. Its colour comes from the curcuminoids, of which curcumin is the one named in most research.
It has one of the largest modern research literatures of any traditional plant, concentrated on inflammation. The persistent practical problem is absorption: curcumin on its own is poorly taken up, which is why it is so often paired with black pepper or with a fat.
What it is doing in these products
Sea Buckthorn with Turmeric Oil uses the oil fraction rather than the powder, and the fresh turmeric rhizome juice uses the whole rhizome with guggul. Pairing turmeric with a berry oil is at least sensible on absorption grounds, since the curcuminoids are fat-soluble.
