Ajwain is carom seed, the fruit of Trachyspermum ammi, and is a kitchen ingredient across north India before it is anything else. Its sharp thyme-like smell comes from thymol, which makes up a large part of its essential oil.
Its traditional use is digestive — bloating, gas and heaviness after eating — and it is one of the household remedies people actually still reach for rather than one that only survives in texts.
