Spirulina is not a plant and not a herb — it is a cyanobacterium, grown in water and dried. It has been eaten for centuries around lakes in Chad and Mexico, and is now farmed commercially worldwide.

Its interest is nutritional density rather than any traditional medicinal use: it is roughly 60% protein by dry weight, and carries B vitamins, iron and the blue pigment phycocyanin. It is a genuinely useful food for people on restricted diets.

Source matters more here than with most things on this list, because spirulina grown in uncontrolled open water can accumulate heavy metals and other cyanobacterial toxins.

What it is doing in these products

Spirusash is spirulina rather than sea buckthorn, included in the range as a complementary nutritional supplement.
