Shilajit is not a plant. It is a tarry exudate that seeps from rock faces in the Himalaya through the summer, formed over a very long period from compressed plant matter. Raw shilajit is purified before use — the shudh in the name means exactly that — and unpurified material is genuinely not safe to take.

Its constituents are usually described as humic and fulvic acids along with a range of trace minerals. In Ayurveda it is a rasayana, used for stamina, recovery and ageing, and it has a particular association with high-altitude vigour that it shares with sea buckthorn.

What it is doing in these products

It appears in the tablet and capsule formulations — Empower and Empower-X tablets, Diabosash and Wellsash capsules — rather than in the juices. Buy shilajit-containing products from manufacturers who state their purification, because this is one ingredient where the raw material genuinely matters.
